Some of their policies seem to be really screwed up.
One of their policy is that if you open the flipkart covering, then you HAVE TO accept the package and pay for it. Not the manufacturer's seal or packaging, flipkart's cardboard packaging. They say they'll arrange for a reverse pick up later.
So if they ship you a wrong item, you open it in front of the courier person and find out its the wrong item, you have no choice but to accept it. This is extortion.

Sad to hear you had to go through so much trouble, Rajbir! But glad that it was sorted out.
Fortunately, we haven’t had any bad experiences yet, but that’s what we’re worried about too, since they’re growing super fast.

Hi Sameer, Abhishek here.

Thank you for your compliments, we'll be posting those videos here soon.

As for Flipkart, let me clarify that we're no experts in e-commerce! This blog is mostly opinionated and subjective based on what we collectively feel about all things online.

That said, I speak for most digivaasis when I say we love Flipkart and it's a lot more than the armored packaging.

Firstly, it's probably because they have brought us a number of advertising, art and technology books we would never find in a bookstore here. And even if we could find them on Amazon, we couldn't afford the delivery (if at all they delivered them). And we don't have kindles yet. We're still suckers for the good old dead-tree book!

Apart from the variety of stuff, clean interface on the site, deliveries within promised periods, and yes, the best rates, all their communication with a customer, whether through an email, an FB comment, a tweet, is sincere and looks like they care.
Perhaps being a copywriter makes me biased but it annoys the hell out of me when I get replies like 'Sorry for inconveniance we will revert you in shortly'. A personal and well-written reply can instantly erase some frustration for a customer and show that you care, right?

This also includes their marketing efforts. Even their web banners stand out with clean art styles and focused communication. Each talks about one specific thing - books or cameras or whatever - but never stuffed with everything in one banner. This focus is one thing we can truly appreciate as we can't say the same about all marketers ;)

So in short, I suppose we like it because they have a good product (availability, pricing, deliveries, etc.) and they back it up with good customer support and well focused marketing. I don't think they are the perfect e-commerce business by any means, but from what we've personally experienced as Indian e-shoppers, we feel they get the basics right more than most others do.

Increasingly, it does look like they're preferring to talk about the 'online megastore' rather than the 10 million books. I suppose it's alright if they can maintain the level of service and reliability while scaling up. Esp to compete with Amazon in the future who will probably market the daylights out of them. Flipkart has a fair brand loyalty, I imagine and their logistics must be strong now, so they seem to be in a good position to maintain it.

Ok, so I may have gone on for too long again!
But thank you for dropping by and having the conversation. We'd really love to know if you're in the ecommerce business too and what you feel Flipkart is doing wrong or right. We may not be experts in the area, but we're certainly very interested! :)

Dear author - If I know a name of who's writing this - I will enjoy the conversation we would have here. Any whoo ....

I can see you've given 1 reason why FlipKart is awesome - packaging. Can you share more? Could you pin point exactly what should an Online commerce business do to achieve that what FlipKart has? Considering there are a gazillion things to buy online from a Gazillion portals - does FlipKart risk losing what's its built in these years - a reliable online book shop?

Perhaps we might start this discussion at 'why online' - which you've represented beautifully in your video here http://www.wondersofweb.in/.
